Now open to faculty from any community college – see UW Asian and Global Studies Course Development Grants

As part of an ongoing partnership, Highline College and the South Asia Center (SAC) in the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington are accepting applications for the UW-Highline Peer-to-Peer Course Development Grant for Summer 2025.

Funded by the South Asia Center, a U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center, this grant supports the development of new or revised South Asia Studies courses or modules (in any discipline) by Highline faculty in collaboration with UW faculty affiliated with SAC. This program offers successful applicants an opportunity to add new course content or modules to their current teaching, as well as engage with their academic peers at UW. You will revise an existing syllabus or develop a new syllabus or module that enhances or increases South Asian Studies course content at Highline, while gaining valuable experience through networking and other professional development activities.

The South Asia region includes:

• Afghanistan
• Bangladesh
• Bhutan
• India
• Maldives
• Nepal
• Pakistan
• Sri Lanka

In addition to courses that focus on these countries, proposals that situate South Asia in broader, transnational contexts (including Asian-American and Ethnic Studies) are welcome.

Proposals may include topics such as:

• Politics, government & business
• Economic & human development
• History – contemporary, medieval, ancient
• Religion & philosophy
• Gender, women & sexuality
• Caste, race & social relations
• Education & public health
• Climate change & sustainable development
• Arts & culture
• Languages & literatures

South Asia faculty at UW are leaders in a variety of fields, and train undergraduate and graduate students in 33 departments and 10 colleges across campus. Their fields of research and teaching include language and linguistics, history, gender and women studies, architecture, global health, economics, anthropology, political science, religious studies, engineering, business and more.

Award categories and amounts:

• Development of new module to an existing course: up to $2,000
  • “Module” is defined as the addition of new material, activities, and/or assignments that broaden the South Asian content of the course described in the proposal. Modules should include approximately two weeks of instructional material that can be either a discreet unit or infused throughout the course.
• Complete revision of an existing course: up to $3,000
  • “Complete Revision” is defined as the addition of substantial new material, activities, and/or assignments that infuse South Asian content throughout the course described in the proposal. A Complete Revision of a course must be substantially greater than the creation of a new Module.
• Development of a new course: up to $4,000
  • “New Course” is defined as the creation of a course that is a new addition to the institution’s course catalog.

New in 2024: We have opened this opportunity to community college faculty applicants to the UW Asian and Global Studies Course Development Grants. Applicants need not be affiliated with Highline College. Eligible applications related to South Asia will be automatically considered for the peer-to-peer component.
